Ronnie's album title is quite misleading as there is certainly more to the music than simple grooving. Jazz guitarist Ronnie Rathers is a top-call Las Vegas musician whose work has included backing many famous musicians and comedians. His melodic playing style is clearly derived from the Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Earl Klugh and Grant Green school, and it is obvious he has learned from these guitar masters, as well as R&B songwriters like Stevie Wonder and Donnie Hathaway extremely well. His octave riffs are rigorous yet fluid and his songwriting is both mature as well as addictive. If you are a fan of George Benson’s and Wes Montgomery’s octave guitar sound and smooth soulful jazz, you will definitely want to give Ronnie Rathers a listen.
'It's a good thing that ReNeda never gave up because her maiden CD offers an eclectic compilation of songs that touches on such genres as soul, smooth jazz, Detroit R&B, inspiration, soft rock, and adult contemporary with an undercurrent favor of Latin smoothness. Blessed with a natural alto voice, transcending a three- octave range, ReNeda's vocalizations are tastefully colored with deep, throaty, whispery and soulfully raspy inflections that are punctuated with vibrancy and power. She delivers this 'vibrant power' on such dance-trance tunes as 'Vicious Rumors,' 'Be Free,' 'Rest of My Life,' and is exceptional on the incredible ballad 'I Just Want to be With You,' which, perhaps, is ReNeda at her best. Growing up in Detroit, ReNeda admired the many female singers that called this 'music rich' city their home, which included Anita Baker and Aretha Franklin. She was also influenced by such female vocalists as Mary J. Blige, Toni Braxton, Cassandra Wilson, and especially, Sade. In addition, the church played a strong role in fostering ReNeda's vocal spirituality which prepared her to perform with gospel recording artist Darlene Bell. While ReNeda has admired many vocalists, she prides herself in crafting her own distinct vocal styling, which is refreshing that a newcomer has a signature sound. Over the years, many people had urged ReNeda to launch a singing career, but she always resisted, knowing that her time would come.
Vocalist Jhelisa Anderson is a wonderful artist who hails from a musical dynasty (her sister is P.Y. who sang with D*Note and Incognito, her cousin is Carleen Anderson, and her aunt and step-uncle are Vicki Anderson & Bobby Byrd.). She started her career in Soul Family Sensation before moving on to become an accomplished singer, songwriter, and producer. Her many collaborations have been with artists such as Jeff Buckley, The Shamen, Courtney Pine, Bjork, Massive Attack, Chaka Khan, Greg Osby, Bryan Ferry, Block 16, Dana Bryant, Mondo Grosso and Outside to name a few. Touring in the UK, Europe and Japan, Jhelisa shared the bill with the legendary James Brown, Herbie Hancock, The Roots, Michael Franti, Talib Kweli, Roy Ayers, Sting, Arrested Development and Nitin.
That said - Jhelisa's music runs an emotional gamut: sometimes dark and moody, other times sweet and etheral yet always insightful and cerebral. Her voice is her own. In 1994, Jhelisa released her first solo album "Galactica Rush" on Dorado Records, followed two years later by "Language Electric", both produced by Lee Hamblin and Jhelisa. 2004 saw the release of "A Primitive Guide to Being There" which was Jhelisa's musical commentary on the events surrounding Hurricane Katrina in which she lost her own home and studio. She has recently established her own recording label - Rentavibe Records. Esosojos favorites: Baby God, Freedom From Pity, Love is a State of Mind.
The daughter of the popular late R&B singer Donny, husky voiced Lalah Hathaway is the perfect foil for Joe Sample's compelling notion that The Song Lives On. Finding a happy medium between the graceful straight-ahead jazz trio vibe of his Invitation album and the plucky pop energy of Spellbound, Sample provides Hathaway on seven of the 11 tunes with a showcase for her sultry approach. His and Bill Shnee's production approach is generally sparse, not much more than piano and bass, enhanced on occasion by Fender Rhodes and the occasional smoky input of Kirk Whalum. Sample doesn't seem to mind playing second fiddle most of the time, his trademark mix of dark chords and dancing, optimistic improvisations forming harmony lines behind her; often, though, his itchiness to step higher into the mix comes clear and he breaks into extended upbeat improvisations. On a cover of his Crusaders hit "Street Life," Hathaway turns the title into a mantra and Sample echoes her sentiments with sharp, percussive reiterations of the song's main melody. Then Hathaway stops and Michael Thompson steps in with some edgy electric guitar lines. Other song choices range from reverent takes on standards like "Fever" and "For All We Know" to vocal versions of older, well-known Sample instrumental hits; for example, with Norman Gimbel's cheery lyrics, Hathaway turns the once moody "All God's Children" into a life-affirming love song. The point seeming to be, in finding new life for both his old material and the classics, Sample is bringing a form of immortality to favorite songs.
This young lady has a beautiful vocal range and that appeal that grabs you as you listen to her voice. This is a wonderful CD, she is truly an artist that has not received enough recognition. Lalah flows well with up-tempo and the ballads. Her voice is soothing and it's a melody that cannot be compared, she stands alone. Vocalist Lalah Hathaway shines on her 1990 debut CD. Standout cuts include the Jazz ladden "Somethin'", the funk filled first single "Heaven Knows", the Angela Winbush produced "Baby Dont Cry".Lalah's vocals really come alive on the sassy "You Got It Going On". "Smile", reminds one of the early Rufus and Chaka Khan days (this track was produced by former Rufus member Andre Fisher). Lalah successfully attempts a remake of Vesta Williams' "I'm Coming Back".It unfortunate that Lalah has never received her props with this CD, another case of a talented singer being overlooked in a world of skinny, half dressed video models who have no singing talent whatsoever.
A Moment is the second album of R&B singer Lalah Hathaway. The album's first single was "Let Me Love You," produced by Brian Alexander Morgan of SWV fame. A video was also shot for the single. The follow-up single was "Separate Ways," released as a double-A side single with "Family Affair." The Martyn Ware-produced "Family Affair" was actually released in 1991 and billed as "BEF featuring Lalah Hathaway. Lalah Hathaway should have become as big a name in 1990s R&B as the equally talented and equally Chaka Khan-influenced Mary J. Blige, but regrettably, the singer never became as visible as she should have been. Donny Hathaway's daughter didn't record often enough (four years passed between her first album and her sophomore release "A Moment")
Singer, songwriter, producer Lalah Hathaway is commonly known as the daughter of soul legend Donny Hathaway (who is regarded as the soul of soul music). It is a surprise as to how many are unaware that this soul sister has worked with Mary J. Blige, The Winans, Take 6, Joe Sample, and Marcus Miller. Previously Lalah Hathaway released three solo albums, during 1990 and 2004, all of which gained huge critical acclaim, and eventually returned Lalah Hathaway with several stateside R&B and jazz hits and one UK top 40 with her cover of Sly Stone’s ‘Family Affair’. Lalah Hathaway’s Self-Portrait offers twelve soulful songs, throughout her modern day soul master piece she includes stunning fender rhodes, noticing the attention to layers and textures. It is an album that is like a tapestry of Lalah Hathaway’s raw emotion. Each song is carefully written, often to match her melody, this by the end of the song takes the listener on a journey. Lalah Hathaway has a moving voice, like her iconic father yet she still keeps it her own unique sound and style. ‘Let Go’ is Self-Portrait’s first single, catchy and deep in groove. Songs that overall shine are ‘On Your Own’, ‘For Always’, ‘That Was Then’, ‘One Mile’, ‘Little Girl’, the incredible ‘What Comes Around’, and the amazing ‘Tragic Inevitability’.
Jeff Golub is categorized in the smooth jazz genre because he's an instrumentalist; at heart, though, he's an Eric Clapton styled rockin' blues guitar player who, on Out of the Blue, finds himself stumbling happily into Tower of Power-like jam sessions. He pulls no punches from the start, rocking hard and furious with his distorted electric thrust darting around and over Ricky Peterson's brooding B-3 and a three-piece horn section on "Wanna Funk?" Same idea, south of the border style, on the similarly hard-hitting Latin blues hurricane "Manteca," where Golub explores some improvisational territory in between sizzling solo sections by his longtime friend Rick Braun. Golub co-produced the album with keyboardist Philippe Saisse, whose comparatively laid-back style keeps Golub in the cool on more mid-tempo, easy to latch onto pieces like "Indiana Moon"; the guitarist gets more aggressive as the song progresses, but the hooky piano harmony line stays a constant. Saisse helps bring out Golub's completely meditative side on "The Velvet Touch" for about half the tune before the electricity rises once again. It's as if Golub just can't keep his virtuosity to himself, no matter how emotionally restrained the trappings. "Groanin'" is a unique departure which plays as though Golub got up one night in a straight-ahead jazz club and tried his hand (pretty convincingly, at that) at the bebop quartet thing.
Avenue Blue's Naked City is a laid-back, mellow jazz and soul fusion, highlighted by blues flourishes. The main distinguishing feature of the group is guitarist Jeff Golub, whose fluid playing dominates the record, even when he is accompanying such guest stars as Phoebe Snow and Bob James.
This record by Japanese keyboard player Masabumi Kikuchi was released in 1981 on Columbia records.A wash of electronic jazz sound with chattering guitars and a solid bottom end which hits a groove and stays on it. Heavily influenced by Miles Davis electric projects but with better dynamics and more focussed recording/production. Features a cast of all stars including Hancock, Airto, Grossman, James Mason, Liebman, Hino, Aiyb Dieng -list goes on and on. Some kind of groovy free jazz, you should enjoy the track "Gumbo". This is highly recommended.
Heavyweight beat generation cosmic hip hop n’jazz featuring Dudley Perkins and Georgia Anne Muldrow, Muhsinah, Dorian Concept and many more. Somewhere between the past and the distant future, sparked by dusty old jazz records and beat generation hip hop, at the audio cross-roads of Detroit and Vienna, are the sound stories that have been steeping in the head of 23 year old beat navigator Paul Movahedi, also known as The Clonious. His outerworldly, astral jazz riffs burst out between booming beats and shoe-gazer future-funk to give the pulse of his electronic sounds a unique organic edge. For fans of Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke, 14KT and more!
The Milanese producer and DJ Gerardo Frisina comes again with an amazing new 12” titled “Samba Skindim” of Brazilian music. Two tracks consist of covers such as “Samba Skindim”, a piece composed by Luiz Enrique in the early sixties and “Solo”, which bears the signature of João Meirelles. The following track is “Ej Estou Aqui” and it differs from the previous ones, as the rhythm is faster and suitable for the dancefloor. The main idea was to conceive an EP with four pieces. After a long period of break in the recording phase, the second track of the original playlist was replaced by “To My Mother” which was dedicated, exactly, to the memory of his mother.
Smooth jazz trumpeter Patches Stewart teams up with bassist/producer Marcus Miller on this magnificent record. Sounding like a total blend of mid-'60s and early-'90s Miles Davis, Stewart deftly mixes modal trumpet lines and punchy muted asides with funky processed beats. Taken as a whole, the album brings to mind Davis' Doo-Bop more than Kind of Blue, and in that sense it is a pleasingly adventurous post-bop/funk-jazz meets instrumental pop outing. Notably, Stewart's versions of Herbie Hancock's "Tell Me a Bedtime Story" and Stevie Wonder's "Overjoyed" showcase the trumpeter's mellow melodicism, while originals like "I Know What You Like" and "Congo Square" bring out a funky hip-hop influence. Alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett and others join Stewart here.
The first thing that jumps out about this album is the fact that Supastition finally has production that will do his unique flow justice. Supa takes his listeners on a journey through everyday life with lyrics that are heartfelt and earnest. Whether he's asking his ex-girlfriend to take him back or recounting his journey to get signed you'll feel like you're standing right there with him through it all. With help from beatsmiths like Illmind, Nicolay, Jake One, Madwreck, and M-Phazes, the production has more meat for Supa to sink his teeth into this time around. Chain Letters is a nod to the true school while progressive in its attempt to return hip hop to its golden roots. Guests include Little Brother, Nonameko, D Minor, Seven, and Can Tell.
Keyboardist Rachel Z divides her debut CD into mainstream and contemporary sections, but in reality she plays basically the same in both sessions, emphasizing her acoustic work in a style most influenced by Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and occasionally Bill Evans. The music is usually soulful enough for the jazz lite listener and contains just enough chance-taking for more serious jazz collectors. Nothing too unexpected occurs, but this enjoyable set has some fine solos from the leader and the contrasting saxophones of David Sanchez and David Mann.
Rachel Z, a talented young keyboardist, sticks to acoustic piano and varies the personnel and instrumentation from track-to-track on this interesting set. In addition to a woodwind section, such players as violinist Regina Carter, tenor saxophonist George Garzone, bassist Charnett Moffett and drummers Terri Lyne Carrington and Cindy Blackman are among the supporting cast. Rachel's ten originals (which are dedicated to various women ranging from her mother and a 17th-century painter to Billie Holiday and Joni Mitchell) cover a lot of moods with the emphasis on relaxed and thoughtful pieces. Although her own piano playing sometimes recalls Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea (along with touches of Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett), Rachel Z is gradually developing her own style. This is the type of record that needs to be heard several times to be fully appreciated for Rachel Z's subtle playing and moody themes contain much of value beneath the surface. Well worth checking out.
FreeTEMPO is the performing name of Takeshi Hanzawa. He makes a lot of awesome electronica remixes and music, usually in English and contains a LOT of guest features.
If you're a big electronica fan, you'll love his music, don't miss out on FreeTEMPO. Some of you may know him from Koda Kumi's song and from Coffee Prince's "Immaterial White".
We caught wind of this release from the homey DJ GP. This album cover may cause you to think that this is a rock or ska album, but this album is pretty dope! If you're into Liquid Spirits, The Rebirth or Jamiroquai, you should definitely check this one out!
Damn! consists of Svante Lodén, Erik Hjärpe, Måns Mernsten & Måns Block and are maybe most famous as the Swedish rapper Timbuktu's wild live band. They have together performed critically acclaimed sell-out shows all over Scandinavia with their blend of hip hop, funk, rock & world music. This unique mix is what will be expecting you on Youth Style but with the difference that this time we have damn! in the main spotlight. On the album you'll find everything from blue-eyed soul, rock, space-funk, folk/pop, afro-cuban rhythms and even electronic excursions in a marvellous mixture. It might sound a bit scattered but believe us, this album has despite its variation a firm concept that will spellbind you. We like to think that Youth Style is something fresh, inspiring and different. But most of all it's an album with 12 fantastic songs.
Active since the swinging sixties, Alex Malheiros received his share of fame as part of Brazilian samba trio Azymuth. The threesome, famous for their ‘Crazy Samba,’ hit the big time during the seventies and eighties, culminating in 1979 with ‘Jazz Carnival,’ which became a big hit. Ever so active now on his own, the bass player recently felt the need to return to the grooving sounds he grew up with. Supported by Banda Utopia and his daughter Sabrina – also a recording artist for some years now – ‘The Wave’ grabs the mood of the Brazilian summer perfectly. And although Malheiros is famous for his funky bass playing, ‘The Wave’ is a real team effort, focusing on his compositions rather than his musical skills.
Masato Honda, the long-awaited NEW album exploded with a focus on cutting edge sound funk tune! Eldar E. Djangirov, most commonly known only as Eldar, is a jazz pianist. He was born on January 28, 1987 in Kyrgyzstan (ex-Soviet Union) and then moved to Kansas, United States. He currently resides in New York City.
He began playing the piano when he was three years old, learning from his Russian parents. The first thing he remembers learning was C Jam Blues. He later took classical lessons and was "discovered" at age 9 by the late New York City jazz aficionado Charles McWhorter, who saw him play at a festival in Siberia. The family moved to Kansas City, drawn there in large part by the city's jazz history. During his Kansas City years, even before reaching his teens, Eldar already started building a reputation as a true child prodigy, appearing on Marian McPartland's award-winning NPR show, Piano Jazz, when he was only 12 years old, being the youngest performer to ever appear on her show. Eldar attended Interlochen Center for the Arts in his young teenage years. Eldar attended St. Elizabeth's grade school and the Barstow School in Kansas City, Missouri. Eventually, the family moved to San Diego where he attended the Francis W. Parker School (San Diego), and then to the Los Angeles area where he attended University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music.
Eldar has five albums (four released by Sony Classical), his debut album Handprints in 2003, Eldar in March 2005, his album Live at the Blue Note in May 2006, re-imagination in June 2007, and his latest album Virtue in August 2009.
The German hip hop duo of Kabanjak and Dogu from Cologne known as Ancient Astronauts have unleashed their album "We Are to Answer" to the masses. The group has called their album "a musical trip through the cosmos returning back to Earth with spacey flutes, intergalactic lyrics and earthy drum beats".
Featuring break beats, funked out vibes and galactic grooves, the new album features collaborations with The Pharcyde, Phat Old Mamas, Raashan Ahmad, Entropik, Tippa Irie, DJ Zeph & Azeem and Bajka.
"We Are to Answer" brings that stylishly, cool vibe of dreamy, whimsical soundscape to the listener and artistically through music, able to paint that image of an intergalactic ride through their music but also taking a variety of other artists for the ride and just showcasing creativity as a whole.
Scott got her start performing locally at age 15. She went to college in San Francisco, singing in both jazz and pop ensembles there. She was noticed by Emilio Castillo, a member of Tower of Power, who hired her to do backing vocals for the group. This led to further work as a session musician in Los Angeles, working with Spyro Gyra, The Yellowjackets, Hiroshima, Etta James, and Bobby Womack. She also appeared in a production of Selma, about the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Scott's first single was a cover of Brian Wilson's "God Only Knows", which was a hit in the U.S. and was followed with the 1979 full-length Dreams of Tomorrow. Her 1991 release Without Warning was critically acclaimed among jazz writers. Her duet with Bobby Caldwell, "Sky Dancing", was a hit in Japan, and she toured that country following its success.
She signed with Warner Bros. Records in 1996 for the album Take Me With You, which featured Dori Caymmi, George Duke, Russell Ferrante, Ricardo Silvera, Boney James, Bob James, and Jimmy Haslip.
